01.12.10, Haifa: Following a ceremony with the Prime Minister, Carmel Tunnels in Haifa have been opened for traffic. This set of tunnel marks a number of milestones for Israel: With more than 6 km the Tunnel system is the largest road tunnel project in Israel, the first inner city toll tunnel and the first privately financed BOT-project of that dimension in Israel. This highly complex project could be finished 5 month ahead of schedule. The traffic and safety equipment of the tunnels is closely related to European tunnel standards with some exceptions due to specific Israeli legal and operational framework conditions. VIA contributed to this project with the design for the traffic management system (TMS) and was actively involved in the approval process with the authorities. This was a challenging task due to Carmel tunnels being the country's first major tunnel there were no experiences and guidelines for road tunnels available in Israel. VIA's vast experience in Tunnel TMS design and operation contributed a lot to this task during the approval stages SFAT and SSAT. Finally, all necessary testing procedures could be successfully finished in time.
