Renewal of the TMS in a 27-year old motorway tunnel underneath the Berlin Tegel Airport as part of a general reconstruction according to the improved German safety standards (RABT).
The Tunnel features a motorway interchange which causes a complex road system with narrow curves and a number of decision points inside the tunnel. A reliable and simple traffic guidance system is therefore a core element of a safe traffic flow. The tunnel system is part of the main commuter access route to the city of Berlin from the north which covers high traffic volumes.
The TMS of the tunnel includes lane signalization, variable message signs, traffic detection, overheight vehicle detection, variable sign-posting and barriers. Close interaction with the other safety equipment guarantees an immediate response of the TMS in case of alarms.
VIA is responsible for the concept, planning for approval, final design, invitation to tender, supervision of realization and testing.
