Integrated Dynamic Route Guidance System 'centre/airport/fair/stadium/port'
on motorways in the greater area of Nuremberg

The guidance system VLS is an impressive example for integrated route guidance in a metropolitan region. This project has been initiated by the City of Nuremberg, the Highway Administration of Northern Bavaria and the Nuremberg Trade Fair. It covers 70 km of motorways and 33 km of urban roads around the Nuremberg trade fair and further event locations such as the stadium, arena, harbour and the Nuremberg airport.

Variable message signs and programmable LED text displays integrated into the classical motorway sign-posting enable a flexible route guidance to special events. This way, no additional system has to be used. The sign-posts substitute the normal route recommendation with the best route, based on the current situation of the regional traffic. Thus, long distance traffic and local, event-related traffic can be separated by destination, in order to maximize the use of available road capacities.

VIA was responsible for the planning, planning approval and final design of the VLS on motorways.
