Temporäre Seitenstreifennutzung und Streckenbeeinflussung A9 Fahrtrichtung Nürnberg
TMS with hard shoulder running on motorway A9, near Munich, northbound

Temporary opening of the hard shoulder with a traffic management system (TMS) on the A9. The 30 km section between the junctions Neuahrn and Holledau (A9) will be equipped with a video detection system.

The section between the junctions Holledau and Neufahrn on the federal motorway A9 is currently a major bottleneck in both directions. In the direction of Munich, this is mainly caused by heavy commuter traffic in the mornings as well as intensive traffic periods during the weekends and holidays.

Since the commissionung of the eight-lane upgrade between the junctions Munich-North and Neufahrn, the carriage way along the junction Neufahrn has been reduced to three lanes. As a result of this, the congestion hotspot Munich-North (A9 & A99) has been moved to the section between Neufahrn and Pfaffenhofen .

Another eight-lane upgrade along the respective sections is out of the question. However the temporary opening of the hard shoulder can significantly decrease peak time congestions. For that reason, TMS will be upgraded with additional display points. The side stripe opening ends at the junction Holledau whereas the TMS will be continued to Rohrbach. The existing blue signposts are to be adjusted and upgraded with variable elements.

The designated variable message signs will support both LED and prismatic displays and a surveillance system with dynamic cameras will allow automatic event detection. The system will be operated from the traffic management center Freimann.

The section in the direction of Munich is to be equipped similaly in a parallel project which is not a VIA project. However, the respective actions are being processed on a collaborative basis.
